For example, the article says, that "anyone can come". Okay ,that's fine, but what if a project advertised that it is a "Heterosexual" Senior development, although anyone can come? Because every senior housing building or development is safe and supportive of heterosexual tenants.LGBTQ seniors aren't always welcomed into "mainstream" senior housing, especially if said senior citizen is transgender. I actually know LGBTQ seniors who were refused senior housing because other tenants objected to having gay neighbors. Every senior housing facility is "heterosexual" by default, like so many other things in our society. |

The problem is that if straights don’t want to live in senior homes with gays, the solution isn’t to perpetuate this sort of discrimination by building homes for gays.The civil rights movement didn’t seek to mitigate segregation by building high quality schools for African Americans. African Americans purposefully attended white schools even when they were subjected to violence. |

The issue is safety for the LGBTQ seniors, as well as access to a supportive environment, just like straight seniors normally expect.That isn't always so for LGBTQ seniors in ordinary housing. There have been cases where senior LGBTQ couples have been denied the ability to share a unit together, something almost always afforded straight couples. There have been cases where senior housing staff and tenants have objected to the presence of LGBTQ people living in such housing facilities. There have been incidents of violence against LGBTQ seniors by straight tenants. Again, heterosexual senior citizens wouldn't ever have to think twice about any of these things before seeking housing. Elderly LGBTQ people MUST. |

I will be the first one to applaud and cheer on the day LGBTQ people are able to be who they are without fearing for life and limb. Think about this: the saddest part of Pride is STILL the train ride home. Everybody removes their beads, stickers, and Pride-themed apparel, so they don't get fucking jumped at their home stations. When that is no longer necessary, I will then say special senior homes for LGBTQ elders aren't, either. |

Given the LGBTQ comm7 it’s is about 10% of the population, such would be inevitable. The thing is finding tolerant hetero people who will coexist peacefully. Sadly, this isn't as easy as it actually should be (I for one could care less about that, just understand and respect my personal hetero lifestyle, I just want peaceful neighbors that would support me as I would them as warranted). Until that day comes, a place that bills itself as LGBTQ friendly and supportive is needed. Just as long as they don't discriminate or evict on the basis of such. |
