When I took typing at John Dewey, they were manuals but fairly new, with some advanced features (I think there was an auto carriage return, just push a button and it returned for you). This of course was about 10 years or so before your HS time, I guess JD probably had electrics around the time you were in HS I agree that computer keyboards are easier.
