Ok I guess being an artery deemed essential for traffic flow would play a factor in the decision to keep it open during dtress test and resulting repairs. Still not a wise one though. Good thing you weren't there that fateful day.

Actually it was simple negligence in the case of the Kansas City walkway.

Look at a picture before it collapsed. It's got an upper and lower level with diagonal girders forming a triangular support pattern. That makes the whole bridge rigid.

Probably should have, but that is a major east-west arterial in that area. It is actually US 41, so it continues past the populated area to the west coast of Florida and will take you to Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, etc. May go all the way to the Tampa Bay area.

Wasn't the street closed to traffic when the completed bridge was rolled into place ? Traffic was rerouted then, why not on the day they did the stress test ?

The design of this bridge was probably fine - it just wasn't properly set onto its base, and they tried to adjust it while traffic flowed underneath. It looks like it just slipped off the base it was supposed to rest on.

How did this bridge just suddenly slip off the base ?

An earthquake would have done that but there wasn't one.

I think since this bridge wasn't properly supported, the stress was too great near the base and gave way at that point.

From what I see it's not a Warren, Pratt, or Howe truss. Its not any kind of a traditional truss which is why I say they were getting cute.

The revised design essentially lost redundancy. Somewhere in this bridge redundancy was lost as well.

And negligence is usually the result of cutting corners in the thought that the designers are smarter than their predecessors and have figured out a slick way to avoid axioms of engineering.

OK. But I'd be very surprised if it turns out the design of the truss was the cause of failure. But we'll see.

OK, I stand corrected. Having watched Sand Box John's posted video, it sure looks like a cute design contributed, then followed by improper transport and improper correction techniques, neither of which would have been an issue if it hadn't been a cute design.

If anything I wonder how the truss doesn't add a level of redundancy to prevent a failure.

The truss is critical in making the whole bridge really stiff. What I infer from the video John posted is that this bridge had less redundancy than many, and when it was mishandled during installation a lot of the redundancy that was left was destroyed. Then there wasn't enough redundancy left when they over-tightened a rod and caused it to fail.

Me thinks AvE will be proven to have pointed out the point of primary failure.

point of primary failure

I interpreted the video as indicating multiple failures, no one of which would have sufficed:

- Too little redundancy, so that the failure of one rod could bring the bridge down.

- Failure of the movers to obey instructions.

- Failure of the engineers to realize that serious damage had been done.
