Of course this is representative of everyone who is even the slightest bit liberal, right?This has been going on for more than 40 years. Back in the 1970s a friend of mine went on a group hiking trip, and one of the guys on the trip was proud of one of his major accomplishments as an employee of a particular state (I think it was Wisconsin). He got the name of the position "Ombudsman" changed to "People's Ombudsrepresentative." And then there is PETA, who doesn't like the name Fishkill (not sure how they feel about Catskill). |

Do you also oppose contemporary changes to non-gender-specific job titles, such as from "motorman" to "train operator", "patrolman" to "police officer", or "fireman" to firefighter", as more women began filling these positions?Interestingly, the US Air Force retains "airman" as an enlisted rank for troops of both genders, to this day. They haven't yet come up with a non-gender-specific replacement. This is also true of ratings in the US Navy, many of which still end in "man". Given the many women now serving in the Armed Forces, I'd think they could update these terms, too. |

This one looked ok until I got to the bolded word:The booklet features a list of gender-specific words to avoid such as “honey”, “darling”, “guys”, and “love” to help staff members grow more aware of what might offend those around them. Dunno about Australia, but 'round these here You-nited States "guys" has become mostly gender neutral. At least, phrases like "guys from work" and commands like "Guys quiet down!" are used by both genders to address groups of all genders (even if it's used to refer to an all female group, you're more likely to hear them referred to as "guys" rather than "gals"). If that ruffles their feathers, what do they think of California's ubiquitous "dude"? |
