Posted by SLRT on Sat Dec 30 19:18:08 2017, in response to Berlin "Safe Zone" thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sat Dec 30 16:23:59 2017. It reminds me of an incident decades ago at an NYC zoo (I forget whether Bronx or Central Park) in which numbers of captive zoo birds were being killed inside their open air (but caged) enclosures. When some said that the birds have to be put inside secure enclosures others said this would be a terrible concession to violence in society. But at least one person said that in a society where people will no longer control their own impulses we have to consider physical barriers. I may be recalling the details imperfectly but that's the gist of it. So in Berlin. If that society can not or will not count on the restraints of civilization to prevent mass violence against women in a celebration, we may need to offer women a "cage," not to keep them in, but to keep the thugs out. I can't think of a way to put it more politely. |

Posted by AlM on Sat Dec 30 22:12:34 2017, in response to Re: Berlin ''Safe Zone'' thread, posted by SLRT on Sat Dec 30 19:18:08 2017. So in Berlin. If that society can not or will not count on the restraints of civilization to prevent mass violence against women in a celebration, we may need to offer women a "cage," not to keep them in, but to keep the thugs out.I can't think of a way to put it more politely. No need to put it more politely. In performing a major humanitarian act, Germany inadvertently let in a whole bunch of thugs. Now Germany has to figure out the best way of preventing the thugs from doing more damage without destroying the political progress it has made in the last 100 years. The "cages" obviously aren't an ideal approach, and they may not even be a good approach. But maybe they are a good short term solution. They are certainly a better short term solution than returning to authoritarianism. In the longer term, the goal has to be to make it clear to the thugs that their behavior will not be tolerated, and that there will be severe penalties for engaging in it. |

What I find comical is that people think that Germans can't solve this. Yes, safe zones are stupid but they're probably some municipal employee's idea to make his or her job easier, rather than dope out a long term solution. And that doesn't include going full Hitler. The last hijacking attempt in Germany was over in under a minute with all hijackers killed. Nobody went full Hitler then and they won't now. They'll fix it; they always do. |
