If the U.S. and the Shah did it right and the government if Iran was a true Western Democracy then it wouldn't have bred the hatred that allowed the Ayotollah and Radical Islam to become as powerful as it was

That's conjecture. The United Kingdom is not a western democracy but is yet rather peaceful (excepting Northern Ireland, but neither Unionist nor Nationalist factions are imperialistic). Citing the Shah as the sole factor in provoking radical Islam is certainly specious—it certainly does not offer an explanation for the imperialistic aims of Iran, nor does it take into account the external radical Islamic elements outside Iran (e.g. those that Israel have been up against historically).

Wrong. The USA would still be up to its neck due to the oil situation. The situation in Iran has ****-all to do with Israel and everything to do with the Cold War and oil.

And this board is impersonal, so don't try underhanded and diversionary tactics like that.

BTW, one thing that the Islamists hated was that the Shah extended suffrage to women. On top of that, he instituted examinations for clerics, so that the one with the biggest mouth wouldn't be considered a valid cleric.

And wasn't it Bakhtiar that allowed that Ayatollah Khomeini back into the country?

Liberty is defined in different ways.

For example, in Jordan, King abdullah does not make decisions without consulting first with the sheikhs, or heads of tribes and ptominent families. They have an effective voice in the governing of Jordan. However, this is a stratified society. As such, the lower-ranking members of each tribe or family do not have a say, but rather must depend on their "elders" to represent them at decision-making.

On the other hand, it is customary in Arab society for any citizen to have some access to petition the ruler - to have an audience with the king (whether anything useful results from this is a separate question).

This is not a democracy as we in the West would view it, but it is not a completely totalitarian system either, in the sense that the central ruler, the monarch, cannot simply do and decide as he pleases.

The problem is you cant distribute ethanol over distances due to corrosion. Thats the biggest draw back. I remember a CNBC report and it said for the U.S. to be have 0 use on foreign oil it would require 75% of the farms of the U.S. to switch to corn. Meaning instead of the U.S. requiring on foreign countries for oil, we'd be requiring them for food. It's one helluva toss up.

That's a loaded statement, which is why I like CNBC World better.

To cut our reliance on MIDDLE EAST oil, versus all foreign(russia and canada, etc), all you have to do is kick the SUV's off the road, or give them 10 more mpg's.

Some reason they won't. But the changes aren't that drastic.

In the UK they came up with a positive for the ethanol. Besides all the goodness in teh cars, no nuts with nukes, global termoil, self-reliance, lower pollution, the ethanol crops(oranges, sugar, corn, coconuts) would soak up the rest of the CO2 and pollution on that end too.
So the production is cleaner.

*Meaning instead of the U.S. requiring on foreign countries for oil, we'd be requiring them for food.*

Thanks to a certain president selling us out in his tariff policies, Brazil is going to be supplying us all our crops soon anyway. May as well keep some of the factory farms for transport.

We civilized all the native americans and the aboriginies in Australia more "recently".

Maybe it just depends on the group of people you're trying to subvert. Or maybe there isn't anyone left who will be surprised to see a new group of people trying to make them into slaves. Everyone must know by now all the countries that became independant.

Speaking of which, I read an article last week, here we go again, saying they think they found evidence that the Aztecs did fight the Spanish and ATE them in some ritualistic thing.
Most groups can't say they fought back by eating the invaders huh?

Saddam was the same [ok we backed him to keep Iran at bay], but wasn't about democracy either.
Look at Iraq now this is what we get for trying to prop up a sense of 'democracy' as Iran and other forces outside and inside provoking a full scale civil war.

Iraq should've been divided into 3 parts and let each religion keep their part and pull out. Each has hatred for each other based on religion [of the same type not even about Judism or Christianity] going centuries deep. I mean the current war is based on the Muslims pissed off at the West for the crusades when the west tried to reclaim Jerusalem.

If they do though, we're ALL in trouble. As much as Iran doesn't like Israel, they hate US even more. If they manage to make one, it's just as likely that they'd deliver the first one here. And more likely to the west coast than the east coast since you guys are closer to them than we are over here.

FWIW, at least the Russians had some sense knowing that if they ever dropped one, we'd respond rather nastily. The real worry with Iran is that they just don't give a shit. It'd be martyrdom in their own little twisted ways. So even for those who don't care about Israel (which is most of America despite what folks say here) we're every bit as much of a potential target as they are, and serving us up first is more their speed than Israel's paranoia about it.

I work with our spooks every now and then and us going first is their greatest fear.

I hear ya, but they've never admitted it. Bottom line though, if it goes to strikes, we're gonna get cooked over here from the fallout. Fukushima was contained largely because it all went into the water and got dissipated. We won't be so lucky if it goes off in the air.

Where I live now suffered greatly from fallout from atomic testing in the 1950's ... some areas around Troy and Latham and Colonie are STILL contaminated. So they built malls and commercial developments on it all.
