Wrong. It's removing a statue that was placed there to stick it to black Americans. Time to take out the trash.

Do you really think that's why those statues were erected? I guarantee if there was no blacks that will left in his country after slavery, and they will all sent back to Africa, the same statues would be in place.

Most of those statues were mass produced and installed all over the south in the 20th century. The one in Durham was one of those, as you can see how easily it tipped over.
No they were installed to stick it to the Negro. People who lose wars don't erect statues to remind them.

That's correct. Most of those statues were placed 1890-1940. In fact, Robert E Lee detested "war memorials" overall.

Confederate flags and related statues are coming down all over the south. You already forgot what Saturday was all about in Charlottesville. There is nothing "liberal" about it. But you make it clear to me you can either be an American or a Republican, as long as Trump is around, and Congress is run by robots and wimps, but not both at the same time.

If you remember the Greenport Scoot in the early 1970's. The train was 1 car, usually an ex-KCS car LIRR #8573. On KCS, it was a Jim Crow car, with a partition across the middle. LIRR used it as a Smoking/Non-Smoking divider.

I didn't really know statues celebrate anything. I thought they just commemorate things.

Secondly, this myth of traitorism. Those confederates, who have long passed on, say the same thing about the North. That's why they faught, against who they saw as constitutional traitors.

Thirdly, why are black separatists, usually the ones protesting the inanimate objects passionately, not seen as traitors? Does anyone here have their Washiteria passports?

Haha, I hadn't even read this yet.

The Durham monument was funded by a local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). Founded in 1894, the UDC was central to remaking public spaces in the South and to spreading the "sanitized gospel of the Lost Cause," well into end of the following century.

There are monuments commemorating the good Arnold did fighting for this country.

Confederates fought against this country. It's like erecting a monument to George III on the National Mall.

Who said they were heroes? And they were patriots to their own side during the war. The poor white trash sharecroppers who will basically invented servants to the plantations certainly did not own slaves and they certainly did not benefit at all from slavery. The folks who erected the monuments.

And they were patriots to their own side during the war.

Tojo was a patriot to his side during the war. Should we erect a monument to him at Pearl Harbor?

The poor white trash sharecroppers who will basically invented servants to the plantations certainly did not own slaves and they certainly did not benefit at all from slavery.

What does that have to do with the generals who fought against our country for the right to own slaves?

The bottom line is everybody on this board knows damn well why this is being done.

Yes, to desanitize history.

I side with having these sort of things in a museum setting, but not prominently displayed out in plazas/parks and such. In fact I think it's important that history, both good and bad be preserved. As a black male it was sad to learn of Jim Crow era injustices and such. Having parents from the south, it was absolutely chilling to hear stuff directly from them (and grandparents) about what they saw and experienced as part of their daily lives.

Seeing actual signage, nooses, shackles and such in the museum was one thing, but I sure as heck don't want to see any of the stuff displayed in public (other than a museum). Similarly, I remember how I felt the first time visiting the Holocaust museum, and can only imagine that a jewish person wouldn't want to see those item other than them being preserved in a museum/history book and such.

We should only remind of the horrors of the past through solemn places, such as Holocaust Museums, to EDUCATE what happened.

Quite different than putting up a statue of a Nazi, which is celebrating what happened.
