I side with having these sort of things in a museum setting, but not prominently displayed out in plazas/parks and such. In fact I think it's important that history, both good and bad be preserved. As a black male it was sad to learn of Jim Crow era injustices and such. Having parents from the south, it was absolutely chilling to hear stuff directly from them (and grandparents) about what they saw and experienced as part of their daily lives.

Seeing actual signage, nooses, shackles and such in the museum was one thing, but I sure as heck don't want to see any of the stuff displayed in public (other than a museum). Similarly, I remember how I felt the first time visiting the Holocaust museum, and can only imagine that a jewish person wouldn't want to see those item other than them being preserved in a museum/history book and such.
