North Korea Backs Off Guam Missile-Attack Threat

Posted by Dave on Mon Aug 14 22:33:55 2017

SEOUL—North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has decided not to launch a threatened missile attack on Guam, Pyongyang’s state media reported on Tuesday, but warned that he could change his mind “if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions.”

The report, published early Tuesday, could help dial back tensions that had spiraled last week following an exchange of threats between North Korea and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump warned Pyongyang last week that the U.S. military was “locked and loaded” and could engulf the North in “fire and fury,” while North Korea, through its state media, had threatened to fire four missiles in a bid to surround the U.S. territory of Guam in “enveloping fire.”

North Korean state media said in its report Tuesday that Mr. Kim had made his decision not to fire on Guam after visiting a military command post and examining a military plan presented to him by his senior officers.

While Mr. Kim said he had decided not to launch the attack on Guam yet, he advised the U.S. “to take into full account” whether the current standoff was to its benefit. He also said it was incumbent on the U.S. to “stop at once arrogant provocations against the DPRK and unilateral demands and not provoke it any longer,” using an abbreviation for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the formal name for North Korea.

“If the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean Peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the [North] will make an important decision as it already declared,” the report quoted Mr. Kim as saying.

Mr. Kim added that the planned launch could still be carried out at any moment, and said that such a strike would be a “most delightful historic moment” that would “wring the windpipes of the Yankees and point daggers at their necks.”

But he's seriously mentally ill. The real danger for millions of South Koreans is that he decides to commit suicide. If we could be sure he would never commit suicide, then he'd be pretty harmless, but we're not sure. It's also why goading him into committing suicide is not good policy.

North Korea is still able to perfect and build more missiles. The only thing accomplished is that Kim won't brag about it.

Getting a deal from North Korea to stop building/deploying nuclear tipped missiles will take time and there will have to be a quid pro quo.

Let's not prematurely declare, "mission accomplished." We still have not extricated ourselves from that one.

Are you willing to bet quite a few million South Korean lives on being right? Especially if he is being goaded and made to feel like there's no way out?

A guy who holds a bunch of hostages isn't necessarily suicidal. But the hostages can still end up dead if the police don't handle it right.

You're talking about this like it's an ordinary hostage situation.

Do you know of any hostage situation in which the police will mollify the hostage-taker and then offer to walk away. And then do it?

It's an "ordinary" hostage situation multiplied a million-fold.

No one is suggesting walking away. That surely doesn't work.

The ideal goal here is to eliminate the hostage-taker without losing any hostages. But no one knows how to do that. A second best goal might be to reduce the power of the hostage-taker to hurt the hostages.

Nobody has an idea how to do the second best goal either.

With ordinary dictators you can always hope he'll die, but in North Korea, the dictator dies and a new one pops up.

Common sense would say that if he continues down his current road, a coup d'etat will take care of him, but he is too willing to take out anyone who looks sideways at him long before anyone can 'gin up a conspiracy.

Because it would be business as usual with the clintons. Why worry about North Korea having nukes when it could be someone else's problem? Bill Clinton, both Bush's, and Obama just passed the problem along until the buck stopped with Donald Trump.

If Kim jung un wanted to start shit, hed need not send a missile to guam, he can point a SCUD right at Seoul. If he wanted war, he could start it at any time by destroying Seoul and the 30000 american troops stationed in South Korea. He knows he would die in a war. You prefer a nuclear barrage of the United States now or in the future because we didn't have a military barrage of Seoul 20 years ago?

And I think you've indicated that you would have preferred the hundreds of thousands of western (and probably Japanese as well) deaths in WWII rather than end the war with the Atomic Bomb in 1945.

Nuclear Barrage? There is a difference between North Korea and what Russia and the US can do. Could North korea hit the US now? Highly unlikely... if we took preemptive action and Seoul got destroyed? Should Japan and Korea bare the brunt for a war that the US would barely feel?

We work hard not to be imperialists, that thought that hey because Japan and Korea is 8000 miles away and their death are okay is imperialistic in thought. Cocky cause of the ocean between us.

Hmm. I think you have a reading comprehension problem. I never said anything of the sort. I just explained some of the thinking (as well as I can, given that I don't share it) behind the opposition to the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan.

And I don't prefer a nuclear barrage of the US over an artillery barrage over Seoul. If those were the most likely choices the South Koreans would have my sympathy but not my support.

The mere launch of a missile from the DPRK towards the US or a US territory would be considered an act of war. Which means a massive retaliatory strike from the US. Adios DPRK! BTW, I don't trust China with regards to the DPRK.
