And I remember when I was in Germany in 1983 there was no end of bitching and moaning about NATO (which my wife, who had lived in Germany earlier assured me was the common attitude). "Oh, those NATO planes flying overhead! We hate them." And a Belgian dude on a train going through that country asked "Why do we need such a U.S. presence. We are not so afraid of Russia as you seem to be.*"Now that they are "so afraid of Russia" the U.S. refusing to guarantee that we are at their beck and call is betrayal. *At the time, European countries were looking forward to getting natural gas from the Soviet Union. The U.S. didn't think that was such a hot idea, but Europeans didn't care. Are they not sovereign? |

None of them openly asked for confirmation of Article V.And what you are reporting from 1983 certainly verifies that there was no de-Nazification in the Bundesrepublik (West). As for not having fear of the USSR, why was nobody traveling eastward across the Iron Curtain, while so many were trying to travel westward?? |

When my wife was a student, it was obligatory for her to visit West Berlin so she could see the "Miracle." As an American, she could move freely through every sector, including the Soviet one.Said it was one of the scariest things she'd seen. The atmosphere, and reconstruction wasn't what it was in the west, two decades after the war. It looked impoverished and she felt watched. Tourism and being comfortable with tourists was, understandably, not an East German thing in those days. All compared with West Berlin, of course, which had its own peculiarities. She spoke German well enough to purchase a Soviet-made camera (is people's camera, everyone) as a souvenir. It cost very little, which was fortunate, since she said it never worked. If she had returned to East Berlin to try to have it fixed under warranty, I probably would never have known her... |

Maybe if that is what the Paris Accord was about you'd have a point. It was all about destroying the United States financially, which Obama and Kerry were happy to do to bring about their Socialist dystopia. If alternative energy is the wave of the future, why does China and India not have to reduce their pollution, but the United States does? If this was about being at the forefront of this field, China would be insisting on caps on its pollution so it can develop new technologies to sell to everyone else in the future. |

In short, the Paris Accord was and is nothing more than an obvious obama INCOME REDISTRIBUTION scam. The stated environmental goals are so weak as to be laughable but the financial obligations for this country would have some serious consequences over the life of the pact. |
