Signs of a con artist 4. That's a change in stance of the right. Before Trump started kissing Putin's backside the same ppl were saying the Obama admin were being too soft on the Russians esp in Russia's dealings with the Ukraine. Now that it seems Trump will go even softer it's all of the sudden ok? 5.We agree on something?...lol |

I put self-preservation over ideology 100% of the time. That and a lot of my close friends were Russian, growing up in Rego Park. There is no red scare anymore, communism has fallen, and the Russians spend less on their military in a year than we do in a month. The "fall" of the USSR (it voted itself out of existence, but did it go away?) is not the same as communism falling; thanks to Red China, it expanded further than at any point in human history. and the Russians spend less on their military in a year than we do in a month Spending is irrelevant; it's what you get for the spending. |

The Republican attitude toward Russia seems to have gone from one extreme to the other. On the one hand, we should always be discussing and negotiating with Russia. They are a major country and have lots of nuclear weapons, and we should do the best we can to avoid unnecessary hostility that could provoke them into possibly dangerous actions. "Evil Empire" talk was never particularly helpful. On the other hand, we shouldn't roll over and play dead and allow them to do things that are contrary to our interests. OK, their taking over Crimea didn't really hurt us. But it was right for us to make a big fuss because if they get too encouraged and invade a Baltic state it will destabilize Europe and that will really hurt us. Therefore we have to make it clear that they will suffer consequences such as more severe sanctions if they meddle too much in the Baltic states or Ukraine. |

My friends were the children of Jewish Russians who fled the USSR. Not surprising, since while the USSR was mostly an equal-opportunity religious suppressor, they seemed to particularly have it out for that group. But, the USSR no longer exists. Russia is just people of a common heritage fighting to survive while surrounded by countries trying to choke the life out of their economy, jihad them, and paint them as global supervillains. |

But, the USSR no longer existsSure about that? The current state of affairs over there is that Moscow is being led by a KGB revanchist who called the fall of the USSR "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the (20th) century" and has moved to pull all former Soviet states back into his sphere of influence. He still carries his CPSU card, and had the nerve to compare the Moral Code for the Builder of Communism to the Bible's Ten Commandments. |

The USSR fell completely because of an ill-timed, failed military coup. Communism would have ended even if the union had remained together. Gorbachev had a plan to convert the SSRs into things more closely resembling our states. The name was to change to "The Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics" so that the acronyms would hold in both languages (USSR, CCCP, SU). Before the coup, nine of the remaining SSRs were in favor of this change. After, they feared that the military might try again and steal back control, so they left the union using the exit clause. I might add, that even the iron-fisted Soviet Union provided a legal means for the members to leave. This is something none of our states in the "land of the free" are allowed to do. |

I probably would have liked that. My main “beef” with the USSR was the communism. I consider my ancestry to be “Soviet” and not “Russian.” I only use the latter to avoid the association with communism. But if I were to visit any of the homelands of my ancestors, I would never set foot in the Russian Federation.**My father was born in the RSFSR but that was sort of an exile. |

My beef with the USSR was three fold:1. The way dissent was suppressed and silenced. Using the Gulags for political activists. 2. Failing to feed their own people. 3. Their treatment of the Jews and other groups as literal second class citizens (banned from certain topics of study in University and certain jobs). The entire place was on its way to becoming North Korea / the Hunger Games (depending on where you thought it would go), and the people were not happy about it. Gorbachev was trying to fix it without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The free travel and unified monetary and defense system for the entire region was basically what the EU is trying to keep together. Since the SSRs were to gain more of a say, "Russia" would have simply had a few seats at a larger table, rather than holding all the keys to the region (by virtue of being the largest). The FSU will likely never see that kind of unity and cooperation again. |

Brezhnev's USSR was not North Korea/The Hunger Games.Like Supply-Side Economics, Communism is a failed economic doctrine and just as anti-human. When the price of oil dropped in the 80's, so did the Soviet Union's ability to still be a world player. Throw in the nationalisms and that house of sand collapsed very quickly. |
