Toronto tried it and after about 3 years, reversed it.It’s time to admit that plastic bag fees aren’t actually working Here's a Canadian bag industry's piece on why plastic bags are actually better for the environment than (or at least on par with) reusable ones: All about bags. This was written to curb a proposal to outright ban plastic bags, but a lot of it holds true even for fees. My favorite argument was the simple math: a plastic grocery store bag usually gets a second or third life anyway, like bringing your lunch to work, lining a small trash bin, or picking up dog poop. Thus, the environmental cost of making the reusable bags is only recovered after it has been reused over 130 times. Also, if it is used to carry fresh foods, they must be washed regularly (either in the sink or laundry) to prevent disease. In areas with limited water (like California) this causes more damage than single use plastic bags would. |

Yeah they did it in DC too. It's just the district, so the fee only affects those who live there and cannot drive to MD and VA. Fortunately, this means only the poor have to pay the fee, not the middle class and above. |

They work in the sense that, businesses get a government mandated windfall in an area that used to be a cost center, and that they discourage use of plastic bags. However, replacing plastic bags with reusable ones is at best environment-neutral. At worst, it hastens public health decline, as people carrying things like raw meat in the bag then go and reuse it the next week for vegetables. With plastic bags, this isn't even a thing. It also makes self checkouts awkward - how do you charge for the bags? I guess they could make them reusable-bag only stations. It's also another tax on the poor. The extra 25 cents a shopping trip for 5 bags means nothing to my financial stability, so I would likely continue to get as many bags as I need. Hell I'm too lazy to rinse out my soda containers at work so I only bother to redeem nickels for water bottles. However, the less well off are the ones who will ration their bag usage and might end up in a position where they're dropping things on their way home just because they tried to save a nickel. |

Do we think that Nassau, Suffolk or westchester will have a 5 cents charge also?I remember being in London and bought something at Boots Pharmacy and had to walk out without a bag. Hold onto your receipts! At Costco and Sams Club, you can use a box for carrying things. I agree that in re-using the heavy plastic bags (like the few I have bought for 99 cents from Trader Joe), they get dirty and soiled inside. |

I actually use them for garbage. I don't see how this will "save plastic from going to the garbage, as I will have to buy plastic bags for garbage instead (and they are usually larger, and thicker than the shopping bags. I just like to empty the garbage a lot as to not have it lying around, so the shopping bags in a pail work great. |

Paper breaks down in the landfill quickly, which is the plus. The smoke stack at the mill and air quality, that is where I question. Is a bias involved toward plastic in the landfill but not air pollution at the paper mill. |

Unless you go for drawstring trash bags (more expensive), it's a pain with the big ones. Unless we're entertaining guests we simply don't need those super thick giant trash bags. |
