Sign of the times ?

Let's see here, employees lose jobs and go on welfare rolls. Viable establishments no longer generating business and sales tax, will cease to exist.

Like I stated in the OP, what about the "mom and pop" businesses.

Watch what happens when the $15 minimum wage kicks in.

The owner is lying. The minimum wage for his workers has gone from $9 to $10.50.

That doesn't require raising the price of a hamburger from $6.50 to $9.00. It doesn't take 1+ person-hours to produce a burger.

Indeed:

$12.50 Happy Meals at McDs
$13.00 Whopper Meal

Entre's at medium sized restaurants will start at $22.00 (up from $14-18).

More small restaurants will close.

Tell ya what...try to live on a $15/hr. wage for a month, WITHOUT going into your savings or credit cards. Do it JUST on the roughly $500/wk paycheck you'd get after taxes for 35 hours. NO cutting corners. You have to pay all your bills at their current levels. No begging your landlord (or the bank, if you have a mortgage) for extra time. No skimping on meals. No selling MetroCard swipes...

You'll discover reality very quickly.

It's pity because your argument is based on the fact that I would pity the people who suffer from low wages. I do, but that doesn't make me support a higher minimum wage.

Why would you close a profitable business now if it was going to be unprofitable in 4 years?

The owner has some other reason for closing that he doesn't want to admit. And even a $15 minimum wage isn't going to cause such a price increase.

And you are not taking into consideration the additional costs that go into the price of a meal:

Rent of the store
Utilities (gas/water/electric)
Franchise fees (if it is part of a chain)
Cost of supplies
Cost of raw food
Cost/Salaries of ALL the people who work at that restaurant
The amount of profit the owner/franchisee wants to (or at least hopes to) make.

Since at least 2005 the DelRio property is owned by the 'ROMISTON REALTY CORP.' according to public records. Current NYC property taxes $36,549/year. Zoned R6B which should allow for a substantial apartment building. Romiston also owns Brooklyn properties at 1616 85 STREET and
1619 86 STREET.

I always thought Roll-N-Roaster would be gone by now as the property on Emmons Avenue is worth millions.

Other articles cite rising supply and labor costs in general, changing demographics and tastes, and two of the three partners being in their 80s. Also, he's not going out of business; he owns another diner at 86th Street and 15th Avenue.
