I've had better luck with the Post Office than UPS.Most of my problems have been with the local delivery. They don't have any way in their delivery instructions to tell the driver to leave it at my apartment door, as opposed to my rear, side or front door. The delivery man will sometimes omit placing a missed delivery notice on any door in my home's immediate vicinity. That's when I suddenly get the third try or else notice. Going to the local office for a pickup is another nightmare. It's 7 miles away and has a waiting room that can accommodate about 10 customers at a time. The waiting line is out the door. The Post Office is a pleasure in comparison. It's only 4 blocks away and open to 8pm M-F (5pm Sat). If I miss a delivery, it's a short walk to a pickup. The line may be long but at least it's indoors. The will add a second or third clerk to the pickup window, if the line gets too long. |

They probably intentionally delay shipping the package to you until it fits into their "standard" window to "encourage" you to pay for an upgraded (ie. more expensive) shipping option. |

I suspect UPS of deliberate delays when something would otherwise be delivered faster than promised.Say you order something from just down the street. You figure you can pay the lowest rate and still get it tomorrow, right? So to disabuse you of that notion, UPS holds the item so that you don't get better service than you paid for. |

To quote someone here "I'm baffled" as to the point of it. You'd think, as we head into delayed package season, they'd jump at the opportunity to deliver early. Makes people like you, you being a global delivery behemoth. |

Once I ordered a case of wine from California. It was tracked as far as the local UPS depot here. Then it disappeared from the tracking system. Numerous phone calls yielded no information. I contacted the shipper after a week, and they made arrangements to re-ship it. A few minutes later the bell rang - it was UPS delivering the case! No explanation, no clue where it was all week. At least it was all there. |

The other day I mailed a Priority Package - which has no guaranteed shipping time, just a probable one - at 3:30 pm from a north Bronx Post Office (USPS) to Manhattan. I was responsible for more than a few packages taking rather circuitous trips through the United Package Smasher system when I was loading trucks. It happens to every loader. You have your chart of which zip codes and services are allowed on a truck (say, 3 day + Ground with all Florida zips for a Florida bound TOFC, all service levels going to eastern Queens, western Nassau zips for the Mineola hub truck), but sometimes boxes will slip through and take an unexpected detour. With a misloaded Ground package we'd get talked to about the miss, but it took slightly more stern note when it was a Next Day or Two Day air package that wound up being stuck in a truck for 3 days going to Florida or somewhere. Usually it'd be something about delivering superior service, and how the company only had good service to give.On the other side I've had a package start at CACH outside Chicago show up on the tracking in Los Angeles two or three days later, only to go through Ontario and the Worldport in Kentucky to Philly Air Hub and end up at my door mostly on time. In that case UPS was apparently flying my ground package back out east to correct an error made by some loader outside Chicago. The only thing that might make me think it wasn't a misload is that UPS is hitting the peak of their Christmas flow now. There's a point near Christmas where they dedicate the ground system to two and three day packages (for example, Florida ground+3day TOFCs were almost 100% 3 day). The ground packages are loaded on old decrepit trailers, usually by the seasonal temps who didn't get unload or driver's helper jobs, because the load chart was simple. Those trailers are just parked out back to be unloaded after the Christmas rush when their packages can be sent on their way. But that was in mid to late December when they still had a chance of getting ground packages where they were going on time after they'd cleared the Christmas air package rush. I've definitely gotten ground packages within 2 days, so I'm a bit perplexed their customer service rep insisted they had to hold the package for 5 days. Other than the aforementioned stockpiling at Christmas, UPS has no real facilities to actually store packages not in transit. The hubs are huge, but they're almost entirely filled with belts, sorts, and package van loading facilities. Is it possible she stated the package would be delivered within the 5 to 7 day period and thus was not late, not that they had to hold onto it? |

They have to hold onto it as it reached what should have been its (SIC, internal) destination in less than 12 hours....Plattsburgh is about 2/12-3 hours north of here. Latham is our regional hub. If it went postal for final delivery, the Albany PO hub is virtually around the corner, maybe ten minutes away. And that transfer would have resulted in a scan. Instead, the package is "somewhere" and I hope it isn't converted to an accordian along the way on top of its mysterious travels. All the tracking says it left Latham some four hours after it arrived. And they swear it isn't lost and will be delivered "on time", whatever that means. :-)This is my holiday baking crap. Every consumer of the future cookies and cakes will tell you how important that package is. Trust me. |

That eliminates UPS right there. For the very few that won't ship to a P. O. Box, they don't get my business. If I'm ordering from Amazon, there is usually more than one source. It is possible that the last scan you saw was the package being placed on a truck for delivery on Monday. The next scan will be when that truck goes out on the road. The tracking that UPS and FDX provide are great, but not fully descriptive. I imagine they are a byproduct of the more comprehensive internal tracking systems. I did have an interesting experience with one package a few years ago when someone entered SWZ as the country code for Switzerland. I was following my packages progress and knew I had a problem when it was entry scanned in South Africa. SWZ is the country code for Swaziland CG |
