If guns are restricted, as in Canada, fewer people have a gun at hand when they become murderous. Some people who don't have a gun handy (about 3 per 100,000 population per year in both Canada and the US) manage to kill their victims anyway. But not having a gun easily available reduces the number who kill their victims using a gun, from about 3 per 100,000 in the US to 1/2 per 100,000 in Canada.So the total murder rate is lower when guns are hard to obtain. It's not impossible to kill your victim without a gun, but it is harder. |
