150 Years Ago Today |
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Tue Apr 14 16:34:12 2015 150 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate operative, less than a week after the South surrendered at Appomattox, ending the Civil War. Lincoln's entire Presidency was spent engaged in the most sanguinary military conflict ever fought on American soil. It's hard to imagine what the Lincoln White House faced--millions of people, prepared to wage war and die, defending an indefensible institution, rather than dismantle one of the great atrocities of human history. At unspeakable cost, Lincoln and his generals finally succeeded in restoring the Union and putting a stop to slavery in the United States, forever. Although the horrors of Jim Crow would persist for another century thereafter, (and, astonishingly, be revived in 20+ states in the 21st century), Lincoln's Presidency remains among the greatest in American history, for doing what it had to, in order to erase an absolutely evil presence in the affairs of our country. Just something to ponder... |

Really?Lincoln was President for the entirety of the Civil War, the bloodiest conflict ever fought in the US. Southerners were obviously prepared to fight and die defending slavery, which they did. Jim Crow is being revived today as the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" which has either been passed or proposed in over 20 states. All those items are FACTS. |

It's something of a stretch to compare a caterer declining to do a wedding cake for a gay wedding with people being denied service in a restaurant because they are black. |

I would think it likely that many of the Southerners who fought and died for their states did so while indifferent to or possibly disfavoring slavery. Ignoring that possibility is editorializing. There is also the FACT, which you ignore, that Lincoln was willing to perpetuate slavery if it would preserve the union: "I understand a proposed amendment to the Constitution—which amendment, however, I have not seen—has passed Congress, to the effect that the Federal Government shall never interfere with the domestic institutions of the States, including that of persons held to service....holding such a provision to now be implied constitutional law, I have no objection to its being made express and irrevocable."
