150 Years Ago Today

150 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate operative, less than a week after the South surrendered at Appomattox, ending the Civil War. Lincoln's entire Presidency was spent engaged in the most sanguinary military conflict ever fought on American soil. It's hard to imagine what the Lincoln White House faced--millions of people, prepared to wage war and die, defending an indefensible institution, rather than dismantle one of the great atrocities of human history. At unspeakable cost, Lincoln and his generals finally succeeded in restoring the Union and putting a stop to slavery in the United States, forever. Although the horrors of Jim Crow would persist for another century thereafter, (and, astonishingly, be revived in 20+ states in the 21st century), Lincoln's Presidency remains among the greatest in American history, for doing what it had to, in order to erase an absolutely evil presence in the affairs of our country.

Just something to ponder...
