TV - How to determine equivalent characters between two different series? |
|
Posted by Pink Jazz on Wed Feb 18 16:53:31 2015 I was wondering, how do you prefer to determine equivalent characters between two different series: by role, by physical appearance, or by personality? My preference is by role, with personality a close second. Equating characters by physical appearance is very flawed, since many characters with a similar physical appearance can be totally dissimilar in terms of role and personality. For example, Powerpuff Girl Blossom's Sailor Moon equivalent is Sailor Moon (not Sailor Venus) because Sailor Moon is the leader like Blossom. Similarly, Andros' (the Red Space Ranger from Power Rangers in Space) equivalent from Power Rangers Time Force is Jen the Pink Time Force Ranger (not Wes the Red Time Force Ranger) because they are both leaders. What do you think is the best way? |

Basically, if you compare characters between two different TV series, do you determine their similarities by their roles, by their physical appearances, or by their personalities?Role example - Andros' the Red Space Ranger's equivalent from Power Rangers Time Force is Jen the Pink Time Force Ranger, because they are both the leaders of their teams. Physical appearance example - Andros' the Red Space Ranger's equivalent in Power Rangers Time Force is Wes the Red Time Force Ranger (not true IMO), because they are both Red Rangers. Personality example - Powerpuff Girl Buttercup's equivalent in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is Trini the Yellow Ranger because they are both tomboys. |

I think by role.I often thought that Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves on Mission Impossible was closely similar to Colonel Hogan, played by Bob Crane on Hogan's Heroes as they were both leaders under adverse conditions. There were other similarities, like Mission Impossible's Barney Collier (Greg Morris) and Hogan's Sgt Kinchloe (Ivan Dixon) were both black guys and also were the go-to dudes for anything technical, especially radio and electronics. your pal, Fred |

The character Peggy Matsuyama in "Himitsu Sentai Goranger" was called "MomoRanger"literally "peach ranger". KiRanger (yellow ranger) was male. The first five X-Men were Iceman, Beast, Cyclops, Angel and Marvel Girl (later Phoenix). I can't figure out their equivalents in other five-man bands just yet. |

Yep, several of the Yellow Rangers who were female in the American dub were male in Super Sentai. Trini the original Yellow Ranger though was quite a tomboy; her Powerpuff Girls equivalent would be Buttercup. |
