I did register for the draft, I did get called for 'Nam and got a temporary deferment because of a dying parent just days from going in. I ended up at Fort Monmouth anyway in a civilian capacity and at least partially took care of obligations. I would have gone though.I'm not going to wave my finger in your face but ... I really don't think you understand what was going on at the time. Given the attitudes of the time, "draft dodgers" paid heavily for their choice. |

There was no lottery during most of the Vietnam war. Draftees were "selected" on the basis of their age - oldest first. They were drafting 22 year olds before the 1964 buildup. It quickly went down to 18. I did not request an exemption. The only people who were "exempt" were women and those whose parent or sibling died while serving (4-G). All others could be "deferred." Anyone who was deferred had his eligibility extended from age 26 to age 35. |
