I did register for the draft when I turned 18 and could have been drafted had it been reinstated and my number low enough to be picked.

Could'a, would'a, should'a is not the same as having been there.

There was no lottery during most of the Vietnam war. Draftees were "selected" on the basis of their age - oldest first. They were drafting 22 year olds before the 1964 buildup. It quickly went down to 18.

I did not request an exemption.

The only people who were "exempt" were women and those whose parent or sibling died while serving (4-G). All others could be "deferred." Anyone who was deferred had his eligibility extended from age 26 to age 35.
