But theCatholic Church doesn't say that about it. You said yourself this was some antiquated idea from "years ago" (even taking what you say at face value which is not advisable to begin with).

And in any event, it doesn't matter what the Catholic Church says about it. Your original claim was about Christianity in general. You are now narrowing it to Catholicism in a failed attempt to salvage your claim.

There are numerous references in the Bible to God being the ruler of the universe and that everything is within the domain of God. Therefore, there is nothing "that which is Cæsar's."

Cæsar is not a generic term for a temporal ruler. It refers to a specific political figure whom most Jews resented the influence of. The argument was specifically about whether taxes should be paid to Rome, not Jerusalem.

Note that the validity of my argument is itself not at issue. My initial statement ("That interpretation is disputed") is correct as long as any significant Christian groups disagree with bingbong's interpretation. I have demonstrated that with the link I previously posted.

So what's the claim, that the Catholic Church interprets "Render unto Caesar" as a positive endorsement of the value of government? It's hard to tell at this point.

But if that's the claim, I've never heard it said either and wouldn't believe it without sources.

Well ... in the great earthly ways, everything is up to being "disputed" ... that's just how humans roll.

Here's MY take on it FWIW: Paragraph 1 is what he was talking about. There is God's "property" and humans took it upon themselves to create their own property such as governments and such. What His argument was about Caesar was that human creations are not God's creations and therefore he drew the line there. In other words, religion is not a justification to shirk the obligations of civilization. Wish I had more time to ponder this and provide a better answer, but I'm busy right now.

Let's just say that the various Christian sects which broke away from Catholicism and went their own way are much like Jewish sects which similarly went with their own interpretations of things to the dismay of other groups. The intent of Jesus' lesson was pretty much a separation of church and state. And even more curious, Jesus never intended to create a church in the first place, less one that would be collecting its own taxes as a form of governance. :)

If Jesus never intended to build a Church, that would imply that the very existence of Catholicism is wrong and so everything they interpret is suspect. I find that unlikely.

Also, separation of church and state dates back to the 18th Century. All states before then had official religions and all rulers ruled "By the Grace of God."

And yeah to the first, he did NOT intend to have a church built around him, he had intended to reform Judaism. If you want to have some fun with that, google the various misinterpretations of "Thou art Peter and upon this rock, I shall build my church." (Matthew 16:18) It was philosophical, not literal. See? OCD existed even then. Heh.

And in the absence of evidence I would also not assume it is the official position of the Roman Catholic Church. I do believe that it is the personal opinion of quite a few priests. I vaguely remember having heard sermons suggesting that "render unto Caesar" implies an obligation for most Catholics to participate in an appropriate way in the secular world. It might even be taught that way in some seminaries and/or some Catholic schools.
