Palestinian university students’ trip to Auschwitz causes uproar |
|
Posted by WMATAGMOAGH on Sun Apr 13 10:46:30 2014 "if you want to engage the Israelis, you have to understand where they’re coming from.” Mutual understanding of both sides would go a long way towards solving this conflict. Meanwhile, the reaction of Palestinians to this trip idea is sickening.Story here |

It proves that some Arabs are no friends to the Jews, but it also shows that there are Palestinians who maintain their own narrative who do not outright reject the Israeli one, which is important if you wish to see this conflict end some day. |

There's this great piece by Marcus Brigstocke that I can't seem to find the video of, but the pertinent part goes something like this:Jews! I know you're god's "Chosen People" and the rest of us are just whatever but when Israel acts like a violent, psychopathic bully and someone mentions it, that DOESN'T make them anti-Semitic. And for the record, your troubled history is not a license to act with impunity now! If you think it's "anti-semitic" to say that Israel shouldn't be oppressing Palestinians then I suppose that makes you a Jewish supremacist more than a white supremacist per se, but either way you're still a racist. |

Anyone can post anything on the internet and have it picked up by Google. That doesn't mean the contents of the article are true. Care to tell us what you Googled exactly?I need to finish getting ready for seder, but I read enough to see that the author wrote that the Palestinians have been on that land for thousands of years while saying the Jews have been there only since Zionism was established as a movement in the 1800s, and that is simply not true. There has been a Jewish presence on that land for thousands of years as well. That should tell you more than enough about that writer's POV. |

This is what the author wrote:This was my first trip to Palestine-most westerners call it Israel…the Israeli government was formed in 1948 as part of a vision set forth by a secular European colonial political movement called Zionism, founded by Hungarian Theodor Herzl in 1896. Herzl, an atheist, sought to free the Jews from European oppression and anti-Semitism, with the ultimate goal being the creation of a Jewish state. He first proposed East Africa's Uganda as the location of the Jewish state [this is entirely false, Uganda was proposed by others and rejected by Herzl]. This proposal also found the approval of the British government which controlled Palestine since the First World War. Herzl, however, later identified Palestine as the country of choice. I knew this. |

Right, because moving into a land by fiat of a colonial power and confining the native inhabitants to a ghetto kept in perpetual poverty doesn't count as "acting like a psychopathic bully." Then again, if recollection holds, you have previously endorsed violence as a response to even the most casual of provocations so maybe your definition of the term is just a bit warped. No matter how clear it is that racism is hard-wired into the human psyche, I still shake my head at how a race that has been oppressed for centuries will immediately start inflicting that same oppression on others the minute they're given the chance. |

By not mentioning at all while fixating on the origins of Palestinians. Why does it need to be mentioned? The point is that Israel (the country) was forcibly placed on that land by a colonial power which evicted the people already living there— whether the people evicted from that land were evicted wrongfully is relevant; the presence of people living there who were not evicted is not. An article on wrongful foreclosures probably won't mention the houses that weren't wrongfully foreclosed, but that hardly implies they don't exist. |

Either you're an anti-Semite or you're very ignorant of history. First of all, Jews were always in "Palestine" as much as the Muslims. The United Nations, not a Colonial power partitioned Palestine to a Jewish State and an Arab State. The Jews actually fought the "Colonial Power", Britain. Nobody confined anyone to "a ghetto kept in perpetual poverty". If anything, Israel made many more concessions than they had to.But then again, maybe you're just an anti-Semite. |

What colonial power? When the League of Nations Mandate expired in 1948 the British withdrew making Israel terra nullius and therefore available to its people to form their own government. In Israel, Palestinians were made citizens of Israel. Meanwhile, Palestinians living on land occupied by Jordan and Egypt were never made citizens of those states. Israel only occupied those lands in 1967 in order to repel a hostile invasion of its recognized territory. |
