Nobody denies the polar vortex; it's been there the whole time, and I remember seeing it for decades on winter weather maps that TV meteorologists like to use. It's the AGW freaks that keep editing the page to fit their agenda."Right now, it's minus ten degrees at the airport . . . which is stupid, because I don't know anyone who lives at the airport!" |

Denying Global Warming Is More Ridiculous Than Denying The Moon Landing |
|
Posted by Nilet on Sat Aug 2 19:56:41 2014, in response to For all you Polar Vortex deniers..., posted by bingbong on Thu Jan 9 20:22:02 2014. After all, claiming that the moon landing didn't happen only requires assuming that a few thousand people working for one organisation keep quiet about something they claim happened over 200,000 miles away, which they faked due to the immense political pressure to one-up the Soviet Union. It's absurd, of course— if the NSA can't keep its spying a secret for a few years despite secret-keeping being an essential part of its purpose, do you really think NASA could keep this a secret for decades? There'd be a dozen Ed Snowdens proving it was faked by 1970. Still, it's within eyesight of the outer reaches of plausibility compared to denying global warming.Claiming that global warming is a myth requires assuming that millions of people, from all over the planet, with very different political and economic motivations have somehow managed to keep quiet about something they claim is happening everywhere on Earth where anybody can verify it, in spite of the fact that every single one of them has no incentive to do so and every incentive to tell everything. After all, a scientist who could actually prove that global warming wasn't happening would be world-renowned for his genius and then be able to top it off by collecting a few million in speaking fees from the right wing. |

The Ologs of this world claim that the temperature sensors are being influenced by artificial heat sources like cities and airports, and that if you put them elsewhere you would not see warming. The claim does not require a worldwide conspiracy; it just requires worldwide incompetence.Meanwhile, the Chrises of this world don't deny that the world is warmer than in 1900. They just say there is no evidence that the phenomenon is catastrophic (or even serious) in nature. Finally there are those who wonder if maybe the models aren't accounting for negative feedback effects. They ask "Are you sure the warming will go on at the rate you are predicting?" They ask the scientists to explain graphs like this and this, which show no global warming since the historically very hot year of 1998. |

This is a WATER VAPOR model ... necessary because that's how they track warming! :)Heating moves water vapor away from the equator and the movement causes what's near the poles to head south when there's enough warmth to displace it. The Ologs of this world claim that the temperature sensors are being influenced by artificial heat sources like cities and airports, and that if you put them elsewhere you would not see warming. The claim does not require a worldwide conspiracy; it just requires worldwide incompetence. It's still patently ridiculous, in no small part because the temperature sensors are (a) worldwide and all over the place, and (b) simply confirming what we already know must be the case by simple physics— more energy comes into the Earth than leaves it. Although I think that's more Broadway Lion's schtick than Olog's. Olog's approach is to simply assert an absurd claim and then run away as soon as he's pressed on it. Meanwhile, the Chrises of this world don't deny that the world is warmer than in 1900. They just say there is no evidence that the phenomenon is catastrophic (or even serious) in nature. Ah, first world white privilege at its finest. If you think global warming isn't serious, try moving to Syria and seeing how harmless it is for yourself. Or just stick around— it's just gonna get worse from here on out. Finally there are those who wonder if maybe the models aren't accounting for negative feedback effects. They ask "Are you sure the warming will go on at the rate you are predicting?" That's still a conspiracy theory— it requires assuming that millions of experts with little in common except a strong incentive to disprove global warming are deliberately suppressing evidence that, claims the conspiracy theorist, is so obvious even a layman like him can see it. They ask the scientists to explain graphs like this and this, which show no global warming since the historically very hot year of 1998. What's there to explain? Your own source shows the temperature keeps rising. I'm not sure where you got the idea that global warming somehow stopped in 1998. |

Yes, which means it doesn't actually show the magnitude of global warming. As the planet heats up, "exceptionally hot" becomes the new normal. I won't claim to be an expert in climate science, but all the people who are experts say that global warming most definitely did not stop in 1998, and claiming they're all hiding some secret truth despite having every incentive to reveal it is just as much a conspiracy theory as claiming no global warming happened at all. |

You didn't link to an article— does NASA actually say global warming is on hiatus or did you just assume that from the graph? I think you are misinterpreting. I think what the experts are saying is that they believe the current hiatus is temporary and that more warming is coming soon. But that wasn't the point I was making. I was pointing out that they aren't explaining why the hiatus has happened at all. I think you might be misinterpreting. That the temperature hasn't gone up consistently year in and year out doesn't mean that global warming has stopped, even temporarily. 1998 was only 16 years ago— not enough time for the average temperature to exceed what used to be an extreme outlier. |

AGW is at best a boy who cried wolf nowAnd the 4th time around the wolf really was there. That's the trouble. Temperatures today are considerably lower than they were predicted to be 20 years ago. But they still are significantly higher than 1970. Many very reputable scientists believe the warming will be very bad, even though earlier models were wrong. My totally unscientific suspicion is that warming will continue at a lesser rate than projected, but still one that will cause trouble for the world and will need to be addressed. |
