That would have failed massively. Why would they want to market fuel guzzling cars without the luxury cachet Cadillac brings to the table? The luxury car segment is the one area of the market that is relatively tolerant of poor fuel economy. Keeping Pontiac around would be nothing more than a money sink as they try to market cheap, expensive to operate cars to buyers increasingly conscious of fuel economy.What they *should* have done was keep Saturn instead of leaving a loser like Buick on life support. That way they'd have a legitimate answer to the slew of 40mpg cars from their competitors without customers being forced to stomach the stench of low quality that comes with anything that has the Chevy badge. |

I drove a gorgeous pearl blue one, similar to this 2 door, with a white vinyl root owned by my employer (Triple S Blue Stamps division of The Grand Union Supermarket Company) regularly.in 1974/1975. It was assigned to an executive VP. A real "sleeper" as long as you didn't make any sudden turns. 455CID 4BBL rated at over 350 horsepower.. IIRC it got around 9 MPG. 0 to 60 in about 6 or 7 seconds. Passed everything but a gas station |

My grandfather's last car was a 1961 Electra 225. After he passed away in 1965, it mostly sat around in the yard (my grandmother didn't drive) until 1968, when my mother's car (1961 Buick LeSabre) died (transmission). She bought the Electra 225 from my grandmother and drove it until early 1974, when it had some problem that supposedly couldn't be fixed by the Buick dealer in Champaign, IL (where we were living at the time), so she traded it for a 1968 Electra 225. That thing was HUGE!! She drove it back to NY, then out to L. A. 2 years later, where it proved to be too much car, so she sold it and bought a 1977 Toyota Celica ST coupe (the car I learned to drive on).Looking back, my mother thinks that the mechanics in Illinois just wanted to get their hands on the car :( Years later (late 80s or early 90s), I saw a 1961 LeSabre or Invicta parked near the Sears at the Del Amo Mall in Torrance (CA). So who knows, the Electra maybe could've made it that long (dunno how it would've handled the mountains on the drive to L. A., though) |
