That would have failed massively. Why would they want to market fuel guzzling cars without the luxury cachet Cadillac brings to the table? The luxury car segment is the one area of the market that is relatively tolerant of poor fuel economy. Keeping Pontiac around would be nothing more than a money sink as they try to market cheap, expensive to operate cars to buyers increasingly conscious of fuel economy.What they *should* have done was keep Saturn instead of leaving a loser like Buick on life support. That way they'd have a legitimate answer to the slew of 40mpg cars from their competitors without customers being forced to stomach the stench of low quality that comes with anything that has the Chevy badge. |
