He screwed up by consenting to the search. You'll notice that the officer asked for permission. Under the 4th Amendment, the police have no right to search your vehicle without probable cause, and he could have legally refused (the fact that he was speeding does not constitute probable cause).

Avoiding a speeding ticket isn't worth losing $20,000.
