The primary reason the US never went with dollar coins was that at first Treasury was going to stop printing dollar bills, so the dollar coins were minted, at the last minute Treasury reversed itself and continued printing dollar bills and the coins went into the Federal Reserve where they stay. Lots and lots of dollar coins. WalMart tried giving dollar coins as change, the customers didn't want them. Right now (2012) the only place you can get dollar coins in Baltimore is the Metro (subway) where to by a fare ticket with a $5.00 Bill for a one way fare ($1.50) you get dollar coins as part of your change. The Banks don't stock them either. |
