The problem is that there are few affordable European cars for the American marketplace. Oddly, GM and Ford could easily port over their European offerings to fix their small car line ups, but GM has refused to do so*, and Ford Americanized the Focus too much. Then we're stuck with VW selling cars with questionable reliability and Mexican assembly.While Ford won't sell the European version of the Focus in the United States, only the outdated and inferior American version, you can still get one in a manner of speaking. The Mazda3 and Volvo S40 are both built on the European Focus's platform, and both are said to perform much the same. Volkswagen sells the German-built Passat in the United States, for not all that much more than a Mexican-built Jetta or New Beetle. My LIRR/NYCT blog |
