What, then, was the non-political reason why same-sex marriage was illegal?Same sex marriage is contrary to the purpose of a marriage for establishing a household to care for children. That doesn't mean it's wrong, institutions can evolve. Until recently, there were no laws anywhere against same sex marriage. Marriage was so understood to be between a man and woman that two men or two women being married just seemed like a joke. Now that same sex marriage is established, there is no point in banning it, just as there is no point in stopping incestuous or polygamous marriage. |
