I think the "young people" you describe are in Arlington mostly, not Fairfax.

As I understand it, there is a large black population in the Richmond and Hampton Roads/Norfolk area, that may have been encouraged to vote as a result of Obama's candidacy, I don't know if they vote in large numbers on a regular basis. Also, parts of rural Virginia, especially in Appalachia, traditionally vote Democratic.
