Of those, only Kerry was of the class and age James was referring to:

- Middle-class or well-to-do
- Born 1940-1952

I very much admire Kerry for enlisting in the military and for volunteering for river patrol duty when he could have stayed on a ship off shore.

But he was the exception. Very few people in the category above sought out military service. Most did whatever they legally could to avoid it.
