As usual, no one here points out that a student of, say, 13, who discovers he or she is attracted to their own gender, will have no educational resources to call upon if they wish to learn more about homosexuality, which is, after all, a reality in our world. Because the purpose of general education, particularly after elementary school, is to teach children about the world we live in, accurately and without concealment, doesn't the "don't say gay" bill fly in the face of all that?By making homosexuality a forbidden subject, Tennessee would also, by extension, be strongly suggesting to its students that same-gender love is wrong, so much so that it may not be discussed openly in a school setting. What a fine example of ignorance undoing education. As for "deeply held religious beliefs", that "homosexuality is immoral", that's fine, as long as those "deeply held religious beliefs" are kept out of public schools. The right of religious belief does not mean these can be imposed on every student in the school, particularly gay or lesbian teens, who need understanding at that stage in their lives, not labeling as a "forbidden subject". |
