She may be related to Willie Mangum, the South Carolina candidate* of the Whig Party in the 1836 presidential election.Perhaps, but much more likely is that her ancestors were owned by him or his relatives. Slaves took the last name of the people that owned them both when slaves and then later when freed. That's why NOI Muslims used to change their last names to "X" since their real family heritage had been lost. I'll add that there are lots of "Mangums" in NC and the large majority of them are black so it's possible that he was a prolific slaveowner or that he had many relatives. |
