Certainly the mess we got ourselves into with our laissez faire capitalist economy of the last decade should push us toward a bit more socialism when it comes to essential services.

LOL, you are completely delusional. And you see how well the move towards communism worked the last two years, the people pushed it right back the other way. People don't want to be under the control of the government, they want to work to create wealth for themselves and be free.
