On the other hand would you have supported the Japanese building a shrine across from Pearl Harbor in 1950, while the memory of Pearl was still fresh in everyone's mind? It takes a long time for people to forget. My dad was still angry about Pearl to the day he died in the mid 1980's. OTOH it doesn't even cross my mind...In time the memory of 9/11 will fade just like the memory of Pearl has faded, but I can understand the anger that the families and friends of people who died in the towers feel. Instead of compassion they get responses like "tough" from people who support the mosque. I believe that if it is built it will just increase the anger since the families will feel that their government and fellow Americans have abandoned them. While I do not think that the mosque can legally be stopped, after all it is private property and protected by the first amendment, I do feel that it is insensitive on the part of the people involved in this project and their supporters. It will intensify the anger, not abate it. |
