It’s not about how long it would take to implement, it’s about placating the right on this topic, because it’s a dumb hill to die on. Ultimately, people without proper ID are low information voters, and low human capital in general. When they do vote, they are poorly informed and choose candidates for office and positions on referenda for the stupidest fucking reasons.I don’t think these people ought to be explicitly disenfranchised, but if they find it so inconvenient to get a non-driver ID, then maybe they’re not motivated enough for civic participation. As for your inevitable argument that it’s hard to get a birth certificate for some people, then maybe there can be pro bono legal clinics that help people with that. I don’t think it’s a prevalent problem. |
