Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic and Socialist candidate for New York City mayor, has explicitly said he wants to “shift the tax burden” to “richer and whiter neighborhoods.” This statement appears both in public interviews and in a housing policy document published on his official campaign website Mamdani’s proposal, titled “Supporting Homeowners and Ending Deed Theft,” argues that New York City’s property tax system unfairly favors wealthy, predominantly white neighborhoods, particularly in Manhattan and affluent parts of Brooklyn, while overtaxing working-class areas like Brownsville, Jamaica, and the Bronx. His plan would lower property taxes for lower-income outer borough homeowners by raising rates on more expensive homes in wealthier areas. However, Mamdani has said repeatedly that his proposal is not motivated by race, emphasizing that “whiter” neighborhoods are simply a factual description of those that currently pay less due to old assessment caps |
