But I am sincerely convinced that social contagion has caused many more people to identify as "transgender" than is really the case, and this is also happening to people who are mentally ill in other ways and convince themselves that "transition" will solve their problems when it won't.Agreed that many people think that transition will solve their problems, when it won't. But since almost no one transitions irrevocably in a short period of time*, most of those for whom transitioning does nothing will probably realize that the transition isn't doing what they want. There are also lots more people who, 30 years ago, would never have thought about transitioning as even a partial solution to their problems. * I suppose there are unethical surgeons who will operate on someone who just decided the other day that they were transgender, but I doubt it's many. |
