Examples of Typical New York Incompetence

Posted by Peter Rosa on Thu Jul 3 15:04:31 2025

Examples:

- The Second Avenue Subway. But of course. If this were better known outside the city it would make NYC the laughingstock of the nation. Building it would be a tremendous economic boost to parts of Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, which today are big fat zeros in economic terms.

- Continued failure to build new Hudson tunnels. Everyone has recognized the need for these for decades. If built with sufficient clearances they also would provide double stack access east of the river.

- Speaking of tunnels, the disruption that will result from the East River tunnel repairs will be bad enough, what makes it worse is that the tunnels need repairs because of Hurricane Sandy almost 13 years ago!

- Letting nature reclaim the old Rockaway line in Queens when it could be a vital link in the transportation network. Dishonorable mention to the failure to reinstitute passenger service on the Bay Ridge line.

- Allowing Floyd Bennett Field to just remain there economically worthless when the city urgently needs industrial space now that WFH has hit office jobs so hard.

- Although it’s finally done, East Side Access took FAR too long as cost FAR too much.

- On a similar note, the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site took way longer than it should have, especially since it was a tremendously symbolic sign of the city’s recovery.

- How’s that rail link to LaGuardia Airport going?

- The Javits Center urgently needs a huge expansion so it can complete with the megacenters in Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Orlando for the biggest and most lucrative conventions.

- Finally, NYC seems to be the only major city that hasn’t quite figured out how to install and operate public restrooms.
