Wow ... thanks for "chewy" there - am getting tired and stupid and need to pull the plug for the night. The PROBLEM with these (I worked for the NYS Public Service Commission in the Department of Public Service) and it's amusing to see discussions I had a decade ago come back to haunt me. Heh. I got into SERIOUS trouble among the Cuomoites by saying what I've been saying here, but nothing's changed. Science has an annoying habit of being immutable - argue all you want, the NUMBERS don't change. As much as mathematics were fashioned to fit the realities observed, the realities haven't changed, and the numbers are still what they are. :)Forgive me for going Penn and Teller, but ethanol is BULLSHIRT. In order to distill, you need HEAT. Current ethanol technology uses natural gas or oil to heat same ... the ethanol recovered has about 60% of the energy expended to make it. Better to have just sent that damned oil or gas down the pipeline to someone who could have spent it more wisely. For OTHER "alternatives" the numbers decline RAPIDLY. :( I'm all in FAVOR of "new energy sources" ... but I'm old enough to recognize some twit trying to patent a perpetual motion or "brown's gas" machine. Heh. I stand here OFFICIALLY as an engineer and declare, if YOU can show me an energy source that provides MORE energy than it requires to MAKE the energy source, I'll personally give you a hand job on HBO and I'll PAY for the airtime. Or, if preferred, your FAVORITE sexual fantasy will be paid to administer it to you if you just went "yuck!" :) I'm all for science and solutions. I'm NOT in favor of federal grants to crackpots ... at least not until they hand *ME* a check first. (grin) |
