I don't think masks will "become flags for one's political identity ". As mask mandates get eased or eliminated, I think people on both sides will use their own judgment about when, or whether, to wear masks. (I might not wear a mask at Wawa, but I would still put one on to enter a hospital.) I'm just fine with the easing or ending of mask mandates as conditions warrant. For example, Philadelphia, where I live, has gone to "all-clear", meaning that except for public transportation, masks are now optional indoors (individual businesses can still require them). That's a good sign; getting back to life as we lived it before 2020 will be just the tonic we need to get everybody going again.
