To be frank, it didn't diverge from the Hebrew religion; but it certainly diverged from the corruptions in the Jewish religion that were injected by association with the non-Jewish religions around them (those of Edom, Ammon, Moab, Babylon, Philistia, Assyria, Egypt ad nauseam). Certainly didn't help back in Solomon's time when he married all those foreign wives (seven hundred of 'em, not to mention his 300 concubines) who convinced him to build shrines to their gods (1 Kings chapter 11) . . .
