Maybe those polytheists stole the name for the One God.Unlikely. It's far more likely that some early Jew succeeded where Akhenaten failed in Egypt: 1) The Old Testament has multiple names of God, which are cognate to the names of multiple polytheistic deities. 2) Certain acts of various polytheistic deities (e.g. Hadad fighting Leviathan) get reattributed to Yahweh or El (who would be Enlil in polytheism) in the OT (the story's been kept, but the particular name has lost importance). 3) There are a few troublesome verses that can be seen as vestiges a Polytheist source (e.g. Exodus 6.2-3, Judges 9.46, Ps 82.1). 4) Then there's the bizarre prohibition of setting up an Asherah-pole next to the altar of the Lord (and baking cakes for Asherah). If there hadn't been a pre-existing tradition associating Asherah with El, there would be no need to prohibit this. 5) A monotheistic split from the traditional Canaanite polytheism would go some way to explaining the extreme hostility found in scripture between the Jews and the Canaanites. |
