Zimmerman fired a bullet in self defense (not stand your ground) because his life was in danger from being slammed against pavement from Martin. I believe the facts supported a charge of Aggravated Battery according to Florida's statutes. That would have taken the self defense aspect out of play. However, Aggravated Battery is not a homicide statute and therefore I do not agree with the label of killer. The Aggravated Battery statute would have resulted in a substantial jail sentence under Florida law, but I believe state attorney did not charge because they knew they could get a conviction on it versus the almost guaranteed acquittal on homicide charges.
