You are referring to the Haredi Jews, aka the ultra-Orthodox crowd and people leaning toward that position. But not all Orthodox Jews feel this way. I'm an Orthodox Jew from birth (attended a Brooklyn yeshiva for high school) and I couldn't care less if a Jew is Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, Whig or a partridge in a pear tree. I subscribe to the notion of the "pintele yid", that every Jew, no matter how assimilated, has the tiny spark of Judaism in him of her. I think its asinine for the ultra-Orthodox to try to discourage anyone. Hitler didn't check a Jew's pedigree before gassing him to death. Jews should adopt this attitude but in a positive way - you accept every Jew from every walk of life. |
