Judaism doesn't recognize conversions out of the faith. Judaism says if you're born a Jew, you're a Jew all the way. If you try to convert out, you're an apikoris, an apostate, but still a Jew.

By this definition, the late, great John Cardinal O'Connor was in fact Jewish. His mother was Jewish and even though she converted, Judaism considered her Jewish and her son too.

No wonder the guy got along so well with the Jewish community. He was a real mensch.
