I don't disagree. But why are they obviously the papers of the individual? They are needed for the phone company to provide its service.Suppose a merchant in the area of the Whiskey Rebellion had reported to a government agent that a customer had bought large quantities of several of the ingredients of gunpowder. The merchant hands over the sales records* and the feds use those records to obtain a warrant to search the customer's property. Might not the writers of the 4th Amendment have had a discussion as to whether that was a prohibited action or not? They could easily have come out where you have, but I don't see it as being 100% obvious. Or maybe a better parallel would be their internal handwritten notes to request a big wholesale delivery of those ingredients from one of their suppliers ("Ask Joe to ship us half a ton of saltpeter when you see him on Friday, because Ephraim has ordered it"). |
