A center support may have at least slowed its collapse (or kept the entire right side up), preventing some of the deaths.

They should stop trying to be fancy. Pedestrian bridges are a boring solved problem. They don't even need to be ugly like our 1960s-70s era ones:



There. Simple, basic bridge with pretty plants.
✔ Built on the cheap
✔ Not an eyesore
✔ Safely flowing traffic underneath
