Yes it was a poorer brother of West Germany and things were tense as we got there after the Prague Spring, but it wasn't scary. I saw soldiers with machine guns about as often as I do nowadays at Grand Central. When we crossed the border near Fulda to leave, they ordered us out of the car and took the seats out to make sure we weren't smuggling anyone out (they were touchy about that). My dad or uncle bought me a train model of East German multilevel coaches like this:![]() At the border one of the guards questioned why we had this model and I thought he was going to keep it but we ended up putting our car back together and crossing the border. I returned twice since then and found it increasingly friendly, especially if I brought Led Zeppelin records 😀 At any rate, I never felt nor found it scary. Just a bit tense sometimes. |
