I work for New York State precisely because there is a pensionThe irony is that as a matter of public policy, I'd probably *ban* any defined benefit plan whether public or private as they're unsustainable, and I'd much rather pay state workers upfront today and hand out very, very generous matches into a 403b than deal with the actuarial costs of providing for a pension in the future. Hell, just even moving to a hybrid system like FERS would be more beneficial in the long run. Selkirk will argue that the state can go after the rich, but there's only so much one can tax, and given then increase of what the pensions have clawed from existing revenues, I'd much rather use high taxes for the high provision of service. |
